Southeast Kansas teen dies in two-vehicle crash

WILSON COUNTY, Kan. - Authorities say Haley R. Surber, 19, of Erie, Kansas died due to injures after a crash in Wilson County.

The crash happened on August 5th around 8:35 pm about one mile north of Fredonia, Kansas.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a car was driving north on Harper Road and failed to yield at a stop sign. It hit a van that was driving west on U.S. 400.

Surber was a passenger in the car. She died at the scene.

The driver of the car, Cidney N. Smith, 18, of Fredonia, was taken to Wesley Medical Center with a 'suspected serious injury' according to the crash report.

There were five people from Wichita, Kansas in the van -- two adults, a 6-, 8- and a 10-year-old. They were all taken to Fredonia Regional Hospital with 'suspected minor' injuries.
