Parsons Shooting

PARSONS, Kan. - It was a little after 2 a.m. on Sunday when Parsons police responded to the scene of a shooting at the PK Bar & Grill. An estimated crowd of about 100 people had formed in the parking lot.

“One victim was found. He was shot in the back. He was transported to a local hospital and then to Joplin. It was not life-threatening," explained Mike Powell, Drug Task Force Commander.

While the crowd was large, no one reported seeing or hearing anything related to the crime. The incident has some in the community on edge.

“I feel less safe. You know I’m a gun owner. I’m definitely for being able to carry a gun, have a gun...but something does need to be done about the violence in our society,” expressed Darla Sutton, a concerned citizen.

Police do have several persons of interest in the case, believing it may be connected to a previous shooting on Clark Street on May 2, 2019.

“We do believe it was a targeted shooting...I wouldn’t necessarily call it a gang, but there’s a same group of people, some of which are tied to the drug trade, that we're aware of, but I’m not going to say this particular shooting was drug related,” said Powell.

The bar should be back to normal operating hours as authorities quickly processed the scene for evidence, but police are encouraging citizens to "See It, Hear It, Report It."

“In this incident here, we had an innocent bystander shot that could’ve been anybody, so we really need their help to make these people go away,” stated Powell.

Police are actively seeking witnesses in this case. Despite this incident, authorities say that Parsons crime rate has dropped over the last two years.
