Moms Demand Action group holds recess rally to call attention for stronger gun laws

Congress is in recess

Recess Rally

JOPLIN, Mo. - Members of the Moms Demand Action group, friends and family rallied together for a common cause. That cause is to call attention to Congress for stronger gun laws.

"We want them to pass a strong red flag law, and we want them to pass H.R.8., which is a background check law that would make sure every sale, every gun sale is accompanied by a criminal background check. The red flag laws would make it possible for loved ones or law enforcement to remove guns from people who might be a danger to themselves or others through a legal process" said Springfield volunteer leader Jean Knapp.

As congress is in recess, the Springfield and Joplin Moms Demand Action supporters held a recess rally to educate, advocate and provide awareness to others.

"We work for gun sense, we don't want to take anybody's guns, and we respect the 2nd amendment and believe that gun sense laws can coexist with respect to the 2nd amendment" added Knapp.

Knapp says the problem with gun violence is easy access to guns.

"In Missouri, because of our lacks gun laws, in the past ten years our percentage and rate of gun homicide deaths have increased the most of any state in the U.S. and that is not something im proud of."

One advocate, Theresa Montseny, says her grand-daughter lives in fear.

"I have a 12-year-old granddaughter who is scared to death because they go through drills at school. She's afraid to go to the movies, she's afraid to just do regular things that 12-year-old kids are supposed to be doing. All children are experiencing this across our country"

She said that enough is enough.

"The hate behind the people who are using them, this can not be allowed to continue, it has to stop and it doesn't matter what your politics are."

"I think it shows that we're making a difference, we're getting the word out, and we will continue to have events, we will continue to rally, we will continue to start new groups, and we will continue to fight for saving lives" added Knapp.

Congress will reconvene from recess after Labor Day.
