Man who drowned after a police pursuit in Kansas is identified

KBI is conducting a death investigation

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Kan. - The KBI identifies the man who drowned in the Verdigris River after a police pursuit as Caleb M. O'Donnell, 32, of Coffeyville, Kansas.

The incident happened on Friday, August 16th, 2019.

The South Coffeyville, Oklahoma Police Department got a call around 12:20 pm from a person who says they saw an ATV that had been reported stolen from the Montgomery County Fair on Thursday.

The ATV was first seen in Kansas, headed South on U.S. Highway 169 toward the Oklahoma border, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigations.

A South Coffeyville Police Officer began pursuing the ATV at a distance. Kansas authorities were notified.

According to the KBI's preliminary information, the officer then saw the ATV turn north near 500 E. 1400 Road and go through a field toward the Verdigris River.

Authorities say once the officer caught up, he discovered that the driver of the ATV, O'Donnell, had crashed into a tree. The officer then saw O'Donnell struggling in the nearby Verdigris River.

The Coffeyville Police Department, the Coffeyville Fire Department, and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

Authorities threw ropes to the man to try to help him. A Coffeyville officer and member of the Fire Department went into the water and tried to rescue O'Donnell, but were unsuccessful.

O'Donnell was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations was called to investigate the incident.
