Firefighters are called to another fire at the Route 66 Speedway

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. - Firefighters respond to an early morning fire at the old Route 66 Speedway at 13th Street and S Black Cat Road on the west side of Joplin.

The Carl Junction Fire Protection District was called around 1:31 am about an outside fire near the speedway, but when a brush truck arrived, the crew saw the east grandstand on fire.

Additional trucks responded after the fire was upgraded to a structure fire.

According to Fire Chief Joe Perkins, this is the fourth time Carl Junction Fire crews have been out on the property for recent fires. The other fires happened on May 28th (two shipping containers left on the property), May 30th (bathrooms on the west side burned down) and June 2nd (grandstands/press box on east side).

The Fire Marshall was called in to investigate. Perkins says they determined the fire was suspicious in nature and not started by natural causes.

Authorities contacted the property owner. Perkins says the owner does not plan to press any charges even if the case is pursued.

Fire crews let this morning's fire burn itself out and then extinguished any hotspots or embers. The fire was out a little after 3:00 am.

The Joplin Fire Department assisted.
