Delaware County Sheriff: Person of interest in cold case reportedly kills himself in Texas

James Sweeten was Peggy's husband.

Peggy Sweeten was 52 years-old in January 1998 when she went missing from her home on Grand Lake. 

According to a Weslaco P.D. release, officers received that call about about a suicidal person at an RV park 8:05 a.m. Thursday (May 18). 

Officers found James Sweeten, 79, dead at the scene. 

According to DCSO, James Sweeten was found dead in an outbuilding from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Weslaco P.D. stated that an autopsy will be performed by the Hidalgo County (TX) Coroner's office at a later time.

Search continues for Peggy

Earlier this month, DCSO located a barrel underwater in Grand Lake that they believe could be connected to missing person Peggy Sweeten.

According to Sheriff James Beck, on Monday (May 15), divers searched that area of the lake.

Due to the deterioration of that barrel, the dive team was unable to retrieve it in its entirety.

No new evidence was found.
