Grader Blade Test

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ks. - Crawford County, Kansas Commissioner Bruce Blair is one of many county officials who thinks the county's 800 miles of dirt roads could use some sprucing up, especially after the recent wet weather.

"I like to call them rural highways: non paved roads with lots of traffic. And when you have wet conditions like this and a lot of traffic, you get the potholes and you get some washboarding, and it does become a safety hazard," said Commissioner Blair.

In search of a solution, Bruce and other county employees got a demonstration of a new road smoothing grader blade by DMC Wear Parts.

"It's a quick change grader blade system, so it's thinner steel and stronger steel. Because of that, you can cut easier. That decreases your RPMs so you can save fuel. The increased cut makes the road smoother so you're not dealing with potholes and washboards," said Kody McCollam with DMC Wear Parts.

Bruce and his team liked what they saw, but that doesn't mean the new blades are in the bag for Crawford County. County officials will demo the blade for the next three weeks and see if it's the road remedy they're looking for.

"We have several areas that need this type of remedy, so we're going to try some of those target areas. If it works as it looked like it worked today, well we may not replace all of them but we'll definitely get one in each area," said Commissioner Blair.

The decision of whether to move forward with new DMC Wear Parts grader blades is a decision that will have to be made by all three Crawford County commissioners in the coming weeks.
