Charges filed in Joplin shooting that left one man injured

JOPLIN, Mo. - Prosecutors file charges of 1st Degree Assault, Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm against a Seneca man.

Paul Phillips Jr., 31, allegedly shot and wounded Mark Kiefer, 38, of Joplin.

On August 5th, 2019 around 11:19 pm, Joplin Police Officers were sent to a home at 1214 S. Connor Avenue for a disturbance with a weapon involved.

The caller said a male was pointing a gun at him, according to authorities. He gave dispatchers a description of the vehicle with an Arkansas plate. The caller then said he'd been shot and disconnected from the line.

Officers got there and found Kiefer with a gunshot wound to his arm. During that time, another officer found the suspect vehicle in the area of 4013 S. Highway 43.

The officer tried to stop the suspect vehicle, but it fled leading officers on a pursuit. During the chase, police say the suspect, Phillips Jr., discarded two pistols from the vehicle. He was arrested with the help of the Galena, Kansas Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Kiefer was taken to a local hospital and later transported to a Springfield hospital. The Joplin Police Department last reported he was in stable condition.

The Joplin Police Department would like to thank the Galena, KS Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office for their assistance in this case.
