Car hits Main street building, causes gas leak in Joplin

Part of Main closed for a few hours

JOPLIN, Mo. - Main street in Joplin was closed for a few hours after a car hit a building and caused a gas leak.

Officials with Joplin Police Department say it happened around 10:45 am on Friday (6/14).

They say the driver was southbound on Main when they had a medical emergency.

The car then hit two vehicles around 13-th and Main before crossing the northbound lane and hitting Joplin Pawn and Purchase at 14-th and Main.

The vehicle also hit a gas meter, which caused a gas leak.

That prompted an emergency road closure from 13-th o 15-th streets, and building evacuations on 14-th and 15-th.

Mark Farmer, the owner of Joplin Pawn and Purchase says he walked away with some cuts -- but no one inside was seriously hurt.

Farmer:"I'm sitting at the front printing off some papers. And all I heard was a big explosion. And it knocked me out of my chair, I picked myself up.. glass, I've got cuts and glass but. Jumped up, yelled at my wife and said we have to get out because I heard the gas main going up."

Joplin police say the driver was not injuried, and refused to be transported to the hospital.

Spire energy replaced the meter and part of the gas line, but the gas to the pawn shop is still off because it will have to be replaced by the building owners.

Farmer says they plan to rebuild -- and hope to be open again by July.

Farmer:"We got all the guns secure, all the jewelry and the gold and everything of value, we've got it all secured. We're gonna redo the alarm system to bypass the front glass. If we have to take everything off the front, we're just gonna rebuild it back. Secure it till we get the bricks back on it. Give us a couple weeks and we'll be back in business."
