Bear captured in Joplin is euthanized

JOPLIN, Mo. - On July 11th, 2019, the Joplin Police Department went to a wooded area near a housing addition at 11th and Peters about a bear sighting.

They got help from the Duquesne Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff's Office, Joplin Animal Control and the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Authorities say the bear was able to be captured safely and removed from the area.

The Missouri Department of Conservation took custody of the bear and transported it out of the Joplin area.

Conservation officials say they determined the bear was 2-years-old and had become too dependent on humans and decided to euthanize it.

KOAM is speaking more with The Missouri Department of Conservation this afternoon.
