Authorities investigate shooting, man undergoes surgery

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. - Update: According to the Sheriff's Office, authorities have received information that the shooting may have been an accident, however, detectives are investigating this as a suspicious shooting until they can determine what happened.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office and Joplin Police Department are investigating a shooting.

According to Chief Deputy Derek Walrod, Joplin officers were called about a man with a gunshot wound. They responded to the Flying J Travel Center (east of Joplin near I-44) around 8:00 this morning.

Authorities arrived at the scene and found the man. EMS took him to the hospital where he is currently in surgery.

The Sheriff's Office and Police Department are trying to determine if the crime took place within Joplin city limits or in the county.
