Rain held off this morning for the annual Kids’ Fishing Derby at the Neosho National Fish Hatchery. Rainbow Trout were available to catch and keep.

Grandpas, grandmas, dads and moms say they enjoyed teaching the skill of fishing. But more importantly, they say they got some quality time with the kids.

One young fisher kept things simple when our own Jordan Aubey asked her what may be difficult while fishing.

Seven-year-old Erin Schroeder said, “It’s difficult, but not that much!”

“We used to come down here as kids and have picnics. It was just a special time. I even, about the age of (some of these kids), was here at the Fishing Derby,” says Missouri State Representative Bill Reiboldt.

Tomorrow is free fishing day in Missouri and Kansas. It means anglers won’t need a permit, trout stamp, or trout park daily tag at most reservoirs and state fishing lakes.
