Neosho’s Sanders signs to Maryville University wrestling

Kolton Sanders won a state championship his senior season at Neosho.

NEOSHO, Mo. – Neosho High School senior Kolton Sanders signed his letter of intent on Thursday to continue his wrestling career at Maryville University.

“We’ve had a national champ go through there, Nate Rodriguez. One of my former teammates is there, and I really like the coach there,” Sanders says, “It feels really good (to sign), especially at a place like Maryville. I think they’ll have the right opportunities for me to get better as a student and as an athlete.”

Sanders is a 3X state placer for the Wildcats, and won his first individual state championship this year. He helped the Neosho wrestling program win its 9th state championship in the last 11 years back in February.

“It’s like leaving family,” Sanders says of leaving behind the Neosho wrestling program, “We really grow pretty tight as a family unit. It’s hard to go, but I know that Maryville will have the same family unit.”

Sanders says he plans to red-shirt his first season at Maryville.

“After my red-shirt year, I plan to be an All-American,” he finishes, “I want to be at least a 3X All-American.”
