Neosho Wildcats aim for state championship

The Wildcats have been writing history winning three-straight district championship and capturing their first COC title

NEOSHO, Mo. – Senior Diego Vargas has experienced some historic moments. Neosho boys soccer captured the last three-straight district titles and made their first Final Four appearance in program history one season ago.

“It had to take a lot of work cause we came from nothing,” says Vargas.

The Wildcats finished last season 4th at the Class 3 state tournament following losses to Platte County and Webster Groves. Vargas says that team started something and this year they aim to finish it.

“Those two big losses. That we took last year was terrible and now this year we want to come back and win and do what we deserve,” adds Vargas.

Neosho has continued its historic run. This year, the Wildcats finished the regular season 16-and-1 overall, and undefeated in conference play, winning their first COC title.

“We’ve had successful post-season runs the last few years, but regular season, like the one these guys have put together this year, shows a measure of consistency that we haven’t had before, which is great,” says head coach James Carter.

“We all grew up playing together and it was our dream, you know, to make history here. And we kept that in our heads, kept our motivation, knew what we wanted and we just went for it,” adds senior Eder Aguirre.

The thirteen seniors hope to capitalize on the experience they have gained as they make a run for a fourth-consecutive district title. And possibly pushing for their first state championship

“Now this is our last year, so it’s like basically time to shine. So we got to take advantage,” says Vargas.

“The Final Four…it was an example of what we could do and this year it’s going to show, like, we can do better,” adds Aguirre.

Neosho will open up the Class 3 District 12 tournament Saturday at home against Carl Junction. Game starts at 2 o’clock.
