Neosho preps for 2019 season

The Neosho Wildcats are on the field for their first week of football practice.

Neosho is coming off a bounce-back year in 2018. The Wildcats went 8-4 last year and made the district championship game, after going 2-9 in 2017.

While the team does lose a talented guy in Tre’Von Letts, who has moved on to play in the MIAA at Central Missouri, they do have quite a bit of experience back this year.

The Wildcats have 7 two-way starters back from last season, including starting quarterback Gage Kelley.

Kelley came on the scene last season for Neosho and was great right off the bat. He threw for 350+ yards and 4 touchdowns, while running for 750+ and 12 more scores.

On the other side of the ball, the Neosho defense is looking to build off last season’s success. In 2018 the Neosho defense forced 15 interceptions and held teams to 14 or fewer points in 7 of their 12 games.

“You can’t be happy with what you’ve done, you gotta look forward and you gotta look where you can be,” says linebacker Sam Cook, who finished last season with 5 sacks and 1 interception, “We want to be even better, we want to be one of the top defenses in the conference and in the district. We definitely want to be able to prove that we can get takeaways, we can get stops and we can make the big plays we need to. We can win some games. We have players. We have the talent. I want to definitely get back to that district championship game. I want to win that game. I feel that’s something we can definitely do, that’s something that’s achievable.”
