NEO cancels 76th annual NEO High School Basketball Tournament
The tournament generally draws thousands to Miami in January.
Miami, Okla. – Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College has made the decision to cancel its 76th annual NEO Basketball Tournament.
Release from NEO:
Miami, Okla. – For the past 75 years, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) has hosted an annual high school basketball tournament in January as one of the primary recruiting events of the year. Each year, thousands of athletes, families, and fans would attend to cheer on their favorite players and teams. It is this popularity high attendance level, however, that has led the NEO administration to make the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming event.
“Obviously we are frustrated, because we rely on this as one of our largest recruiting events of the year,” said NEO President Kyle Stafford. “Based on CDC recommendations, an event like this would be in the highest risk category. In the end, we care about the health of our community above all.”
The announcement marks the latest operations adjustment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to a face mask requirement for classrooms, all NJCAA sports were postponed to spring 2021.
However, NEO has also increased on-campus student activities by implementing social distancing and mask use. Events like virtual meet ups, grocery bingo, and movie nights still allow students a large “university” experience on campus.
