Names of victims released in Independence double homicide

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Kan. – The KBI releases the names of two homicide victims in southeast Kansas.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the victims are Tyler D. Cook, 27, and Rodricus A. Dawson, 24, both from Independence.

A 27-year-old woman from Independence was also injured during this incident. She is expected to survive.

On Friday, October 16, 2020 around 3:45 a.m., a resident called the Independence Police Department reporting hearing gunfire and seeing a vehicle that had crashed into an apartment.

Officers responded to the 500 block of N. Penn Avenue and found the crashed vehicle, two deceased men and an injured woman. EMS responded and flew the woman to a Joplin hospital.

The Police Department called the KBI to help investigate.
