Murder charge filed in Joplin child abuse case

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Jasper County Prosecutor files a murder charge in a Joplin child abuse case.

Prosecuting Attorney Theresa Kenney has been reviewing the autopsy report of Jameson Long, the 2-year-old victim who died due to his injuries. After looking at the report, Kenney has amended charges to include first degree murder against Brian O’Grodnick. New charges filed also include Child Abuse – Resulting in Death (Felony A) and Child Abuse – Serious Physical Injury (Felony B).

On May 31, 2020, around 9:32 a.m., Joplin Police Officers were sent to the 1900 block of east 8th Street for a 2-year-old boy not conscious and not breathing. Responding officers started life saving measures when they got there. EMS then took the boy to a local hospital. He was later taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment where he was listed in critical condition. The 2-year-old died at the hospital on June 2, 2020.

Investigators arrested Brian O’Grodnick, 22, of Joplin. The Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office filed four counts of Abuse or Neglect of a Child (Felony D) against O’Grodnick.

According to court documents, on or between April 1 through May 31, 2020, O’Grodnick abused the child. He is not the child’s biological father, according to the Joplin Police Department.

Forms of abuse against the child include pinching of the face and shoving, choking the child with one hand while being made to beg for water and punching the child in the face.
