Murder charge filed against man in fatal drive-by shooting in southeast Kansas

Benjamin J. Mason II, 18, of Coffeyville, is scheduled to appear in court a day after Christmas for murder and attempted murder. Authorities arrested him after a fatal drive-by shooting in Independence, Kansas. Mason and his sister are also facing drug charges in the case.

The shooting happened on December 14th around 6:00 p.m. in the area of Laurel and West Main Streets. Police were called about gunshots. When they arrived, they found Kimberly D. Meeks, 19, of Coffeyville, with a gunshot wound. She died at the scene.

Authorities learned that Meeks and another male, Benjamin Ryan Whitaker, were walking in the area when shots were fired at them from a vehicle, according to court documents. Police say Whitaker ran from the area.

Mason is charged with the murder of Meeks and the attempted murder of Whitaker. Officials filed the following charges:

Murder in the 1st degree; Intentional and premeditated
Attempted murder in the 1st degree; Intentional and premeditated
Attempted distribute hallucinogenic or marijuana; Unknown quantity
Attempted poss of para w/intent to manufacture/plant/cultivate contr subs
Use communication facility; In the commission of a felony drug violation

Mason’s sister, Megan McCutcheon was also charged today in connection to this case with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and using a communication device in a felony, according to court documents.
