Nearly 1,000 people from across the globe converged on Route 66 right here, in our own back yard.it’s been four years since these runners, hit this road, to celebrate, it’s legacy.
But now, thanks to the efforts of TwelveOne marketing, communities along historic route 66 are alive again, with the sound of tennis shoes from as far as Austria, hitting the pavement.
Rogers: “We’ve got an obligation with the history of Route 66 and all that it, the economic drivers it has for our communities to bring events like this to our area so we can continue to promote and really just show what Route 66 is all about and the communities.”
The importance of this race…
Rogers: “It’s important not because it’s just one community that’s participating, it’s not just Joplin, it’s six other communities, along with state and county entities and all kinds of sponsors it’s a great way really to unify the four-state area.”
And it’s a unity felt by the racers as well.
Payne: “In a world where there’s so much chaos going on right now, it’s nice to have communities working toward something so good.”
Participants made their way through three states and nearly 30 miles on the full marathon, which, despite the distance, has it’s own reward.
Payne: “It gives you some pretty good bragging rights but, it also gives some pretty good blisters too!”
The reward for the marathon itself however, is “home”.
Rogers: “I think it’s just the spirit of our community, I just don’t think you can bring the teamwork together like you do in the Midwest.”
