Missouri Southern paints Joplin green and gold
New art mural adds splash of color downtown
JOPLIN, Mo. — Missouri Southern is painting the town green and gold with school spirit lining the walls of Joplin’s newest mural.
The project began in May when the Downtown Joplin Alliance asked MSSU Assistant Art Professor Burt Bucher to create a design to brighten up the underpass on 107 E. 6th street.
After hours of work from community volunteers and students, the installment is taking shape.
The goal is to create a fun entrance to events held downtown, like Third Thursday.
“We’ve talked about it being a ‘cool zone’ for Third Thursday in the summers, having music and events down here under the underpass because it’s not very utilized, and it would be a really cool place for that to happen,” said Bucher.
The underpass will also be lit with new LED and UV lights.
The mural should be completed by Joplin’s next Third Thursday in September, hosted my MSSU.
