Missouri Attorney General prevails on appeal to reinstate Down syndrome abortion ban
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri lawmakers recently reversed a district court ruling that allowed abortions based on a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis.
Although Missouri House Bill 126 contains a provision that outlaws abortions based on these diagnoses, a ruling in 2019 halted that provision.
The Missouri Attorney General’s Office argued their case in front of a Court of Appeals in September of 2021 and has now prevailed.
“Individuals with Down syndrome bring joy, love, and light to those around them. They are daughters and sons, sisters and brothers and friends. They hold jobs, play sports, and are involved in their communities,” said Attorney General Schmitt. “I’m proud to help protect individuals with Down syndrome.”
