Missouri American Water begins pipeline upgrades on a project in Joplin

Press release

JOPLIN, MO. (September,17 2020) – Missouri American Water will be investing $1.3 million to upgrade water mains in Joplin in a project beginning September 17.

The project will replace approximately 3000 feet of 8-inch water pipe with 16-inch water main at 26th and Connecticut Streets extending 200 feet past Alabama Court.

There will be periodic lane closures and traffic detours as a result of the construction, beginning on Friday with the northbound lane on Connecticut closed. Drivers should take extra caution when traveling in and around the area.

“We carefully plan and invest in our systems to deliver clean, safe, reliable and affordable water service to our customers,” said Matthew Barnhart, senior operations manager for Missouri American Water. “This is a key investment in our system of underground water mains which will provide an additional 500 gallons per minute of flow to the Crossroads Industrial Park and enhance overall water system reliability”.

There are over 535 miles of water pipe in Missouri American Water’s Joplin water system. Approximately 3.3 miles have been replaced in 2020.

Work on the project generally will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weather-pending, the construction phase of the project is expected to be
completed by the end of December, with restoration of any disturbed land to be completed in spring 2021.

Missouri American Water continues to conduct its work in coordination and compliance with all federal, state and local agencies and directives. As construction begins, Missouri American Water asks customers to continue following social distancing recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by keeping at least 6 feet (2 meters) between our employees and customers.
