PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Southwest Missouri Cyber Crime Task Force spreads awareness of teen sextortion during Internet Safety Day.

The task force seeks to provide information to adults to help protect young ones on the internet.

Preventing Sextortion Among Youth

According to the agency, 1 in 6 youth surveyed (ages 9-17) has shared a nude image of themselves. The statisics show 50% of kids who shared these photos didn’t care if they knew the recipient in real life.

The Southwest Missouri Cyber Crime Task Force wants parents to talk to their children about sexting and sextortion.

Detective Chris Thresher says “limiting screen time will help, as well and having ways to look at what your kids are texting. This includes looking at social media/internet usage as well as apps.”
