Missionaries offering free outdoor services to local community members during COVID-19 pandemic

And the group is just getting started, with no plans on stopping anytime soon.

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. – Mikal Palmer and his friends are missionaries with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints…and because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they wanted to do something to help out their community members.

“What we normally do is we kind of teach people, go in people’s homes and help them that out that way, but because of this COVID thing it’s really hard to do that, people aren’t as open to that and so were just like you know what lets help some people out, let’s do some service, there’s a lot of need for that around here.”

So they posted on multiple community Facebook groups advertising for free outdoor services, like mowing, pulling weeds, picking up branches and more.

“There’s just so many people that need help and it keeps us busy and we realize as we help people it’s more than just yard work they need, they need the hope, they need so much more a lot of them struggle with health issues and things like that, they don’t have anyone to help them, they don’t have family or whatever so it’s just a big help for them, a realization that there is still hope and people that love them, so we’re just trying to show love” added Palmer.

For Carl Junction resident Joyce Washburn, an outdoor task that would have taken her about a week to do herself is now done in a day with the help of the group.

“It’s fantastic because there’s so much weeds there and so much trimming that needs to be done that I’ve just put it off.”

She said she had offered two people money to do the work but both declined, so to have it done for free was something she was thankful for.

“Yay, God has provided” she added.

And the group is just getting started, with no plans on stopping anytime soon.

“We realize that it works really well and it makes people happy so we’re going to keep doing it” added Palmer.
