Miami police identify suspect fatally shot in home burglary
MIAMI, Okla. – Police release the name of a suspect fatally shot in an apparent home burglary in Miami, Oklahoma.
The suspect, identified as Roger Nelums, 30 of Miami, was taken to Miami Integris Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police received a call early this morning, Jan. 8, about a burglary in process. The resident, who called police, said he shot someone who broke into his home on the 900 block of B Street NW.
The resident, who was in his living room, said he heard someone banging on his back door around 12:16 a.m. He then heard a commotion in a side room of his house. The resident said he could hear someone climb through the window of a back bedroom. Fearing for his life, he told police he grabbed a gun to protect himself.
The resident then told authorities that a man came from his spare bedroom and approached him in his living room. The resident says he fired one shot from his gun, shooting the male intruder.
The suspect, Nelums, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 12:54 a.m.
Miami detectives are investigating and will send what they find to the Ottawa County District Attorney. They are not seeking charges against the homeowner at this time.
