The Miami Wardogs have played one game this season, and they’ve already matched their win total from the 2017 season.

The Wardogs opened up the year with a 24-10 win over Claremore-Sequoyah last week. On Friday, Miami will play their home opener against the Jay Bulldogs looking for back to back wins to begin the year.

One of the reasons for Miami’s good start is first-year head coach Zach Gardner. Gardner joined the team in the offseason after winning a state championship at Class A Afton last season. Also, it doesn’t hurt that Miami’s roster is full of guys who gained starting experience as underclassmen the last couple seasons.

“You can see the difference. I wasn’t here last year, and we’re not comparing this year to last year, but these kids have matured a lot,” Gardner says, “I mean we have some kids out there as sophomores playing huge roles down in and down out, and we’re getting a lot of success out of their effort and attitude. The kids are working hard and they see the benefits of the hard work pay off.”
