Flyers at the Miami Regional Airport can enjoy a smoother take-off and landing now that the entire runway has been resurfaced.

City Engineer Chuck Childs says “There were some cracks that had developed, some large cracks, and those were dug out, that material replaced, and that area fixed.”

Crews laid down new asphalt to create a smooth surface, complete with a fresh coat of paint and new lighting.

The taxi way was also extended for larger planes.

This taxi way on the north side of the airport makes it much more convenient for pilots, giving them quicker access to and from the runway.

“If they need a longer runway length, now they don’t have to get on the runway, turn around…they use the taxi way to do that,” says Childs.

To allow for construction, the airport was forced to close for five months over the summer.

Airport Director Kim Horn says “A lot of the regional pilots are very happy with the outcome. It’s an amazing runway, but sometimes the construction process is painful.”

But now they’re open and ready for business! The airport mostly serves the local area, but it is always prepared for visitors.

“We work with people when they fly in to make sure when they get to Miami they have a good experience, help them with any way that we can. Whether it be with a courtesy car or coordinating their rental car, helping them with information about this area,” says Horn.

Next year they plan to give the terminal a fresh coat of paint, and hope to continue working with the FAA on further improvements.
