Mary Ellen White
March 26, 1945 - February 10, 2021
Mary Ellen White, age 75, of Ash Grove, Missouri, passed away at 9:41 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. She was born March 26, 1945, in Burbank, California, the daughter of J.D. and Willie Bernice (Collins) Askins.
Mary was an adventurous strong willed young woman who believed she was as smart and tough as her five older siblings. God gave Mary many talents, including a steady hand for artistic work, the ability to quickly work word puzzles, write books and play instruments. Mary had a loving compassion for animals and people. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.
Mary held several occupations during her lifetime, but she was most regarded for her work in EMS. She worked hard at becoming a paramedic wanting to learn as much as possible to save lives and help those in need. Mary used her knowledge and skills to teach first responders and mentor new EMT’s and Paramedics. She also started the Halltown Quick Responders Unit.
Mary is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Hawkins and Trisha Peterson, both of Ash Grove; two sons, Troy Peterson and his wife, Jackie and Eric Snow and his wife, Sam, all of Miller, Missouri; one brother, Frank Askins of Sedalia, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, J.D. and Willie Bernice; her first husband, Pete Peterson in 1980 and her second husband, Ray White in 2012; three brothers, Robert, Mickey and Jesse Askins and one sister, Barb Fees.
A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2021, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at the Rock Prairie Cemetery in Halltown, Missouri.
Memorial donations may be made payable to the Mt. Vernon Fire Rescue, in care of the funeral home.
