Markley heirs donate shovel responsible for parts of Big Brutus
Big Brutus museum holds dedication ceremony
Board members of the Big Brutus museum held a dedication ceremony dedicating the Markley shovel to Big Brutus from the Markley family.
The Markley shovel was hand built by Perry Markley in the early 1920’s using junk yard parts.
Perry Markley passed away in 1964.
The shovel remained on family land for years before his heirs donated it to Big Brutus.
What is unique about the Markley shovel is that blueprints of the shovel were used to create some parts of Big Brutus.
“Showing what it was kind of patterned off of and down here at this corner it is getting pretty well-known and it’s just pleasant to have that and all the coal mining history” said Markley’s grandson, Darrell Markley.
