Man convicted of Child Sex Crimes now back in Missouri; Cut his ankle monitor and on the run a year

JOPLIN, Mo. — A Joplin man who cut his ankle monitor in March 2021, disappearing the day he was to be sentenced for child sex crimes, is back in the Jasper County jail.

Robert W. Shields, now 51, was on the run for nearly 13 months.

Documents show he was in custody in early April 2022 in Adams County, Colorado. Shields was just recently transported back to Missouri by his bail bondsman Jasper County Sheriff’s office tells us. 

In a two day trial in February of 2021 he was found guilty of child sex crimes. The day following conviction, February 12, 2021, Robert Shields, was released on bond with certain conditions.

  • Electronic monitoring
  • House arrest at the address provided to the Sheriff’s Office

Shields was convicted of four charges dating back to 2017, including child molestation, statutory sodomy, and two counts of statutory rape.

The judge ordered a sentencing assessment and set the sentencing hearing for March 15th, 2021.

When Shields failed to show up for court March 15, 2021 his bond was revoked and a warrant issued.

Before absconding for a year, Shields faced possible life in prison for his current convictions.

Now he faces sentencing on the charges of which he is convicted. His next court date is Monday, July 25, in Jasper County Circuit Court before Judge Dankelson.


He also faces additional charges in Barry County, Mo. Circuit Court #39 dating back to the summer of 2017

  • Statutory Sodomy 2nd
  • (2x) Child Molestation 4th, under 17

Barry County court records show his jury trial was scheduled for early 2022, postponed.  A warrant was issued for his arrest in August of 2021 since Shields was obviously missing court dates being on the run.
