Man arrested in fatal drive-by shooting of a 19-year-old in southeast Kansas
INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — Police arrest a man they say is responsible for the drive-by shooting death of a woman in Independence, Kansas.
Authorities arrest Benjamin J. Mason, 18, of Coffeyville, for first degree murder in the fatal drive-by shooting of Kimberly D. Meeks, 19, of Coffeyville.
On Saturday, December 14th, around 6:00 p.m., the Independence Police Department got a call about gunshots. When officers got to the area of Laurel and Main Streets, they found a female who had been shot. She died at the scene and was later identified as Meeks.
The KBI and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were called in to help in the investigation.
Authorities learned that Meeks and a male were walking in the area when someone fired gunshots at them from a car and fled. The male with Meeks, who is believed to be about 19-year-old, also ran from the area, according to the KBI.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigations says Mason was arrested at his home in Coffeyville on Sunday afternoon. Authorities booked Mason into the Montgomery County Jail.
Police have found the male who was walking with Meeks and are speaking with him. The Independence Police Chief Jerry Harrison says it’s too early in the investigation to provide a motive.
