A Tulsa man is going cross-country on a bicycle with this dog. Mike Minnick’s dog, Bixby, is a rescued animal. They’re stopping at animal shelters, meeting other animals, and trying to raise awareness of pet adopting.

Today, Minnick stopped at the Joplin Animal Adoption and Resource Center. Missouri is the 24th state he’s crossed.

Minnick says, “After we were out on a road for a little while and we started drawing some attention, to us, it just seemed like the right thing to do to help other dogs find their humans to take care of. You know, there are so many dogs out there that are looking for homes, that if we can help out in some small way, then why not do it?”

“I think she is the epitome of what a rescue dog can be. I mean, they are as loyal as the day is long. They are up for whatever you want to put them through. All they want to do is be with their human, you know. I think they look for the right human to take care of, and once they find the right one, they’ll do whatever they have to do to make sure we are doing OK,” says Minnick.

“We usually end up with the hospitality of people, being invited into people’s homes, meeting their family, breaking bread with them, meeting their friends. And a lot of times, it allows us to see a town, big or small, as a local. Sometimes, we stay a night, sometimes we stay two. It’s one of my favorite parts about this trip,” says Minnick.

Minnick is now heading towards Kansas City. He hopes to then make his way towards the West Coast.
