Lopers Foil Senior Day With 8-6 Extra Inning Win

Pittsburg – The University of Nebraska-Kearney scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 13th inning to claim an 8-6 victory over Pittsburg State University and foil the Gorillas Senior Day Saturday (Apr. 16) at Al Ortolani Field.

Jake Stevenson tossed six shutout innings for the Gorillas as Pitt State (16-30, 11-25 MIAA) built a commanding 6-0 lead against UNK (27-16, 21-15 MIAA).

The Lopers turned the tide of the ball game in the seventh however as UNK plated six runs in the frame capped by Max Ayoub’s grandslam that knotted the score at 6-6.

Both teams had chances to take the lead but missed opportunities. The Gorillas, who stranded 16 base runners in the contest, left runners on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings as well as the bases loaded in the 12th.

UNK finally broke through in the 13th against Aaron Snow (1-1) thanks to a single, a bunt single and a costly fielding error. The two teams combined for six errors in the contest, four by UNK and two by the Gorilas.

Brad Foss led the Pitt State offense going 3-for-6 with a solo home run and three RBIs. Aaron Boucher (3-for-6) and Jacoby Martin (2-for-5) also had RBIs.

The Gorillas will close out the season with a four-game MIAA series at Maryville, Mo., against Northwest Missouri State University, Apr. 25-27.
