Lois M. Baker. 87, of Altamont, died at 4:37 a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2019 in the Intensive Care Unit at Labette Health in Parsons.
She was born March 13, 1931 in Liberty, Kansas to John and Pauline (Maxson) VanCleave. She grew up and attended schools in the Mound Valley area. She and Howard M. Baker were married on March 25, 1947 at the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville. They first made their home in Cherryvale for 18 years before moving to their farm north of Altamont in October of 1971. Mrs. Baker was a homemaker and also sold Avon products.
In earlier years, she was a member of the Altamont Home Economics Club and the Order of the Eastern Star in Cherryvale. She enjoyed playing Bingo and collected bells. She was actively involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives. She attended many sporting and school events through the years. After retirement, she and Howard enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cherryvale and later attended the First Baptist Church in Altamont.
One son – Bruce Baker and his wife, Connie, of Dennis, Kansas
Two grandchildren – Bryce Baker and Hannah Baker
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Baker, on February 19, 2007; one son, William Baker, in 2017; a daughter, Brenda Baker, in 1969; three brothers; Chet, Charlie, and infant William VanCleave; and five sisters; Frances “Evelyn” Reilly, Mary Ellis, Audrey Switzer, and infants, Opel and Dorothy VanCleave.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
