Fake News posts online we have collected recently from Joplin sources.

JOPLIN METRO — Joplin News First followers have shared with us “Fake News” posts in recent months, and we have been collecting them.

EASY TIPS TO SPOT FAKES

  • Who posted it on the internet? Is it a police agency or a true news source?
  • Are the photos/post poor quality, a grainy screenshot?

Recently police agencies have been alerting citizens regarding false information.

Newton County Sheriff’s office shared a fake news post regarding a serial killer on the loose hunting women, “This is false information. 100% a hoax. When seeing a post like this, please consider the source. This particular post is being posted in ‘buy, sell or trade’ groups all over the United States. If this was legitimate information, it would originate from an official source, such as our page.”

Joplin Police also echoed, “It has been brought to our attention that this post is circulating on Facebook. We can assure you this is absolutely NOT true. Newton County Sheriff’s Office also reported a similar post circulating earlier.”

The same information in a “Fake News” post lists Joplin instead of Neosho where the serial killer is hunting.

We encourage anyone if they question the validity of a local post online, screenshot it and send it to us:
