Joplin Area Town and Country Quilters Meeting

10:30am–2:30pm at Peace Lutheran Church (3100 N Saint Louis Ave).

A day of fellowship and quilting! At 10:30, learn new techniques with an educational class/video. Then, enjoy a potluck luncheon at noon, followed by featured speaker, Rollie Fraser, who will present a program entitled “How to Prepare Your Quilt to Take a Long Arm Quilter.” Afterwards, a business meeting and show and tell will take place. Any adult can attend two meetings prior to becoming a member. Dues are $20 a year and membership is open to quilters of all ages and abilities.

In celebration of National Hugging Day, the SEK Humane Society will be reducing their adoption fees! Dogs will be lowered to just $45 and cats will only be $25! All adoptable animals are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations.

MSSU Bringing Them All Back Home Film Festival: Hero

 7:00pm at Missouri Southern State University, Cornell Auditorium (3950 E Newman Rd).

A 2002 film from China, Hero is set in ancient China, during a period of war and strife. The king, who has endured three assassination attempts, has implemented a strict edict forbidding anyone to come within 100 paces of himself. However, he lifts this edict for a nameless protagonist, who approaches the king and recounts how he thwarted the assassination attempts. Introduction by Dr. Michel Howarth, director of the Honors Program. This film is a part of MSSU’s Bringing Them All Back Home Film Festival. Free and open to the public.

Back by popular demand, the Joplin Empire Market’s Chili Cookoff will return on January 25! Put your favorite recipe to the test or come to taste all the delicious chili dishes and vote for your favorite. Judging begins at 10:30am and public tasting starts at 11:00am.

Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places as well as People’s Choice. Admission fees grant access to taste all chili and vote in People’s Choice.
