LAMAR, Mo. – A married couple who operate a Lamar business are now both charged for allegedly stealing from customers.

Denis and Brenda Masters own and operate The Rustic Barn Flea Market in Lamar, Missouri (Barton County). Prosecutors previously charged Denis with the theft of thousands of dollars worth of payments and goods in four separate cases.

Now, the Barton County Prosecutor’s Office has added two felony stealing charges against both Dennis and his wife Brenda.

Cases against Denis

The Lamar Police Department investigated several incidents, leading to four charges of separate felony stealing cases.

  • Denis allegedly stole $2,000 in May of 2022 after someone paid that price for the purchase of a portion of a chicken barn. Authorities say the product or refund has been issued in this case.
  • He’s accused of stealing $6,000 in March of 2021 for buying a storage shed. Authorities say he never delivered or refunded the money.
  • In April of 2022, authorities allege Denis of stealing $2,000. They say he was hired to install gutters on a home, but the work was allegedly never done nor was money refunded.
  • Investigators say in a fourth case, he took a $1,000 lawnmower to have the engine replaced. The victim paid $400 and Denis allegedly promised the engine was replaced, but would not return it to the owner. The owner of the lawnmower contacted the police. Denis took the lawnmower to the police station to return it. However, officers say they saw no evidence the engine was changed.

New charges against Lamar business owners

According to court documents, Prosecutors charged the couple with two Stealing $750 or More charges.

Both defendants have $8,200 cash surety bonds issued.

The Probable Cause court statement states the couple financially exploited an elderly individual from 2020 to 2022. They allegedly sold a 68-year-old insulation to be installed in a garage for $6,200 and a silo to be converted into a Gazebo for $2,000. Neither was completed.

The check written for the services was written to the Rustic Barn, a business run by Brenda and Denis Masters. The check for $2,000 was written directly to Denis.

The victim alleges that while trying to get the product she paid for, she spoke to both several times. The victim claims she did so until Denis came to her home, yelled at her, and placed her in fear of him. She states, according to documents, she was afraid to try further to get the product.

The victim claims that incident caused her medical trouble including an anxiety attack and spiked blood pressure.

She states after that, Denis never made any further attempts to deliver the products or attempted the work.

According to court documents, “Brenda stated she was aware that Denis went to the home and caused some sort of disturbance.”
