SAFE ROOM PROBLEMS

We’re learning more about the problems at Joplin’s Columbia Elementary safe room built about two years ago. The safe room has had issues since it was originally planned. It was determined that a mine shaft sat under the original site, so plans were made to move the safe room. But then the new site showed signs of sinking. Columbia does have a basement, which has been the school’s “safe area” and will continue to serve that role until the safe room is ready.

TRIP CANCELED

President Trump has canceled his trip to Missouri. The president was expected to campaign for Attorney General Josh Hawley in Cape Girardeau. But Hurricane Florence is forcing the president to stay in D/C. The Trump campaign says it’s an issue of safety.

It started at Rouse and Atkinson and will continue down Rouse to Quincy street. Repairs will also be done along 4th street from Broadway to Grand.

SMART’S KIDNAPPER RELEASED

Elizabeth Smart says she was disappointed to learn that one of her kidnappers is getting out of prison early. Wanda Barzee has served 15 years for her role in the 2002 abduction. She’ll be set free next week, five years ahead of her scheduled release. Officials say they had miscalculated the time Barzee spent in federal custody.

Florence could dump as much as two and a half feet of rain on some places.
