Area flight instructors and pilots offered kids 8 to 17-years-old the chance to learn about aviation. The event was sponsored by the EAA Young Eagles Program, an initiative launched in 1992 to give kids a new interest and perspective.

Twenty five kids from Pittsburg, Joplin and other areas took flight. Organizers say there was one main reason behind today’s event.

“We’re just trying to promote aviation, get people familiar with it and get the kids familiar so they’ll come back and be pilots someday,” said Pittsburg Airport Manager Bill Pyle.

Upon completing their flight, each child received a Young Eagles certificate and a flight log book.
