Kid Care Bus offers flu vaccines for Pittsburg schools

PITTSBURG, Kan. – When you step inside the Kid Care Bus, it feels like walking into a clinic, and the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas says that’s just the idea.

“It’s set up exactly like a doctor’s office would be so we can do pretty much anything that you could do at a walk-in care clinic, and if we need extra services, x-ray, things like that, then we would just send you back over to the main clinic,” explained Amber Hunziker, a nurse practitioner with CHC of SEK.

The bus has been around for the past five years, providing curbside medical services for the community. The focus this week is on flu vaccines, and it couldn’t be easier for students and staff to check this off their list of things to do.Mobile Unit

“They can come out to the van or the school where we are at, and they can get their vaccines done right here at the school while we are here,” said Robin Wagner, an RN with CHC of SEK.

Having that kind of access is a big draw for busy families.

“Parents don’t have to actually miss work. We do require consent. We speak with the parents before the visit, and then I can call during the visit if they’re more comfortable with that, and give them kind of the rundown of the visit,” said Hunziker.

While this isn’t the first time the Kid Care Bus has rolled out vaccines, there’s an added sense of urgency to get as many people immunized as possible.

“In this case, this is something we’ve done for a couple of years, this year we’re really trying to do a better job of promoting the flu vaccination due to the covid-19 pandemic,” said Tom Stegman, Chief Operations Officer for Pittsburg Community Schools USD 250.

At the end of the day, CHC of SEK is filling a need, making the road ahead a bit smoother for the school district.

“It’s a great partnership. Our staff love it. Our students have a great opportunity. If a student was in a position to where they really needed some medical care, it’s very quick,” said Stegman.

On Wednesday, the The Kid Care Bus will be at Pittsburg High School.Schedule

On Monday, CHC administered over 100 flu vaccines at Lakeside Elementary with the mobile unit.
