Joplin working on comprehensive tree planting policy
The city of Joplin is teaming up with Olsson & Associates to develop a comprehensive tree planting policy for public right-of-ways.
Right-of-ways are areas within 10 to 15 feet of roads.
This program will be implemented in the tornado affected area allowing for planting of different trees in different locations.
“Generally, the property owner takes care of the maintenance of that area and so we’re trying to establish some policies for tree plantings in that area to try to increase the trees in the community and yet deal with safety and coordination with utilities,” says David Hertzberg of Joplin Public Works.
City officials will use the tornado affected parts of town as test areas. They hope to eventually extend the project to the entire community.
