Joplin police release names after couple dies from gunshot wounds
JOPLIN, Mo. – The Joplin Police Department releases names of two people in their 80’s who died of gunshot wounds.
On Saturday, October 9, 2021, Joplin officers responded to 1320 S Massachusetts Ave to help Fire and Medical personnel. When they got there, they found 87-year-old Arline Smolik with an apparent gunshot wound. Arline died at the scene.
Authorities and emergency personnel found 88-year-old William Smolik in the backyard. He had a gunshot wound. EMS took him to a local hospital where he later died.
According to the Police Department, the investigation has shown that Arline and William were married and the sole occupants of the home.
Police are not seeking any suspects in this incident. They believe there is no further threat to Joplin residents. According to information released over the weekend, police categorized the case as a death investigation.
