Joplin Police Major Crash Team investigate crash involving Newton Co. Sheriff Deputy

JOPLIN, Mo. — Shortly after 2 a.m. reports of a person on a bicycle struck in the roadway by a vehicle near E 32nd near S Finley.

On the scene Sgt Thomas Bowin of the Joplin Police Dept tells us a “motorized bicycle” and a Newton County Sheriff’s Deputy Tahoe collided, both were traveling eastbound.

The bicycle operator was transported to an area hospital. Assistant Police Chief Brian Lewis updated information Thursday  afternoon saying the male was listed in serious condition.

The Joplin Police Major Crash Team assembled at 3:15 a.m. using their FARO crash mapping system. This required the entire roadway to clear except for the motorized bicycle and the Deputy vehicle.

NEWTON CO SHERIFF CHRIS JENNINGS STATEMENT

On July 7, 2022, at approximately 2:02AM, a Newton County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle operated by a deputy struck a bicyclist while traveling eastbound on East 32nd Street in Joplin.

The deputy was responding to a burglary alarm call. The bicyclist was traveling eastbound on 32nd St in the outside lane at the time of impact. The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital.

A crash investigation is being conducted by the Joplin Police Department.

No further details are being released at this time.
