Joplin police department responds to Sunday night shooting

The Joplin Police Department responded to reports of gunshots on the 900 block of S. Mckinley Avenue on Sunday night at approximately 11:15 PM.

According to authorities, they located an adult female with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was alert and responsive and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. She is currently in stable condition.

The initial investigation determined that this was an accidental shooting.

Information was received that the victim’s boyfriend was attempting to clean his handgun when the gun discharged and struck the victim. During the investigation, the firearm was determined to be stolen.

The 48-year-old male has been arrested for stealing and unlawful possession of a firearm.
