JOPLIN, Mo. – Joplin Memorial Run organizers say they’ll monitor the COVID-19 situation over the next two weeks before making a final decision on whether or not to change the date of the event. They plan to announce a decision to the public on Thursday, April 9.

The following letter, from Audie Dennis, board president of Active Lifestyle Events, parent company of Joplin Memorial Run, was released to the public today at 1:00 p.m., March 25, 2020:

“The organizers of the Joplin Memorial Run have been closely monitoring the rapidly-evolving situation regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. The health and safety of our participants, volunteers and the Four State community is our absolute top priority and we will continue to remain vigilant as developments transpire.

With the situation fluid and changing daily, and with the race still almost eight weeks away, we have chosen to continue to monitor events over the next two weeks before making a final decision.  Planning such an event involves the collective efforts of many resources and altering the date requires coordination with city officials, local government agencies, medical personnel, etc.  Rest assured our ultimate goal is to ensure a safe, secure environment for the race.  Over the next two weeks we will continue to stay in close communication with local, state and federal officials, will review all possible options and will make a decision with your best interests in mind.

We will communicate our decision to you on Thursday, April 9th.   We will continue to work diligently to ensure your Joplin Memorial Run experience is all you have come to expect.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to strictly adhere to the CDC’s guidelines regarding personal hygiene and appropriate social distancing and to abide by abide by all local, state and federal directives.

Whether it be May 16th or a later date, Active Lifestyle Events, our sponsor and our volunteers will be ready to welcome the running community to our great city to celebrate once again the resilience of our community, our state and our nation.

God bless.”
