Joplin elementary students tour MSSU in Operation College Bound

Some Joplin elementary school students visited Missouri Southern on Monday as part of Operation College Bound. It’s a new effort by the Joplin school system to give these youngsters a look at university life.

First graders from Columbia Elementary School toured the Spiva Library, Student Center, the gym and a number of other buildings on campus.

The program is made possible by a grant from Joplin’s Bright Futures.

“If they’re thinking about it when they’re five, six, seven years old, and they’re planning for it their whole school career and it’s not something that’s out of reach for them, they know they can do it, they know they can make a choice of where they want to go,” says Jennifer Williams of Columbia Elementary.

The project was launched last September at Columbia Elementary. The school is raising funds through various events to sustain the program.
