Johnnepote

John Nepote, a life changing educator, loving father, and cherished husband, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at his home surrounded by family in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  He was weeks away from celebrating his 84th birthday.

John Louis Nepote, the son of an Italian immigrant, was born at home in Franklin, Kanas, on February 20, 1938, to John and Lena (Vender) Nepote.  He attended grade school in Franklin and eventually excelled scholastically and athletically at Arma High School.  After high school, John became the first college graduate of the family after successfully receiving a diploma from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas, now Pittsburg State University.  John began his lifelong career in education at the young age of 19 in Havana, Kansas.

In 1958, John married his wife, of over 63 years, Patricia “Pat” Anne Redd on August 9th in Wier, Kansas.  Shortly after their ceremony, Pat’s brother handcuffed Pat and John together as a wedding present.  Little did any of them know, Pat and John would be inseparable for the next six decades.  Pat and John eventually moved to Erie Kansas, in 1967 to be principal at Erie Elementary School.  After over 41 years of service, being a father figure to the masses, and changing the lives of hundreds, John retired in 1999.

A family man, John’s proudest accomplishment was having his three sons, Tim, Steve and Chris.  He took pride in being a father, a friend and a family man.  Up until his death, John lit up the room with his beaming smile and one-of-a-kind laugh.  As an avid Kansas Jayhawk fan, he gleamed with pride representing his Jayhawk loyalty after moving to Owasso, Oklahoma, with Pat in 2014.  Always ready with a story, John was an entertainer, a lover and giver.  John consistently donated to the Indian Nations of Oklahoma though his missionary work sitting at the slot machines at River Spirit Casino.  He exemplified perseverance, determination and honor.  His loss will be felt deeply, but his lesson, tales and memories will be with us forever.  In his famous opening to any story, “I’ll tell you what…”, I’ll tell you what…those who were fortunate to love or to be loved by John Nepote are eternally grateful.  He will be deeply missed by all, but forever in our hearts.
