Man arrested for murder after woman is found dead in Lawrence County

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Mo. – Authorities arrest a man for murder after a 53-year-old woman is found dead in Lawrence County, Missouri. According to court documents, “the defendant knowingly caused the death of” the victim by stabbing her.

On Sunday, May 24, 2020, around 1:30 p.m., Sheriff’s Office deputies got a call about a deceased person at a home north of Marionville, in the eastern part of the county.

When deputies got there, they found the 53-year-old dead in a vehicle on the property. According to court documents, it appeared to deputies that she had been stabbed.

Authorities say a man, James Pride, was also found on the property. They took him into custody and are currently holding him in the Lawrence County Jail on no bond pending his first court appearance.

The Lawrence County Prosecutor has filed charges of second degree murder and armed criminal action.

The woman’s name has not yet been released. Authorities are still trying to locate family members.

According to court documents, deputies spoke with Jame Pride’s mother who gave a written statement that says in part, “My son James Pride told me he stabbed [victim’s name] cause she was evil..” Pride’s mother states he showed the victim in his car – she then called the police.

Deputy Phillip spoke with the mother, who “claimed her son James Pride told her that he was going to cut her up and put her in a pond or in a hole,” according to the Affidavit court document.

Authorities say the victim had multiple stab wounds, and that she also had defensive wounds on her hands.
