INDEPENDENCE, Kan. – Independence Community College freshman Dre Butler is the top-ranked junior college football prospect in the 2020 class, according to

Butler has played just one season at Independence, but it was a good one. He racked up 66 total tackles, including 11.5 sacks. He also had 2 forced fumbles, helping the Pirates go 8-2 and win their second KJCCC championship in three years.

“He hasn’t even hit his potential yet,” says Independence CC head coach Kiyoshi Harris, who is entering his second season as the head coach of the program, “He’s got an NFL frame at 6-5, 285 pounds. Plus, he’s got great agility. He can do a backflip like a gymnast. You don’t see that too much from guys his size.”

According to, Butler signed out of high school to play for the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, but ended up not playing for the school. He sat out the 2018 season before joining the Pirates in the spring of 2019.

“We brought him in, and we knew his physique and body frame was going to be special,” Harris adds of Butler, “This guy has all the tools to get it done. He’s extremely strong.”

Independence is no stranger to having the best juco prospect in the country.

Last season, linebacker Jermaine Johnson was the top-ranked junior college recruit in the nation according to 247sports. Johnson committed to Georgia, where he finished with 20 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

“I think it means they’re talented and they’re playing hard,” coach Harris says of having the top-ranked juco prospects the last two seasons, “You have to give credit to our coaching staff for recruiting such talented guys. It’s hard to do because everyone is fighting for the same guys. Coach Donerson does a great job with the defensive line and coach Martin does a great job with the entire defense.”

According to website, Butler has gone on just one official visit, but has a visit with the Oklahoma Sooners scheduled for this weekend.
